Assignment task: Stability Or Change: Personality over Time

You have experienced firsthand two personality trait assessments this week. Take a moment to recall the assessments. Reputable tools like those in the Week Learning Resources are developed based on personality trait theories. In this assignment you will have the opportunity to reflect on the strengths or limitations of personality assessments and whether your personality has changed over time. You will also get to talk to some people who have watched you grow up and see if you are right about how you have or have not changed over the years. Enjoy this opportunity to learn more about yourself and who you want to be.

Complete the "16 Types Personality Test" and the "Big Five Personality Test."

To Prepare:

Review Chapter 6 of your textbook.

Reflect on your Big 5 and MBTI results and how well you feel they describe your personality.

Consider how you would view the results if they were used by a prospective employer to evaluate you for a job or promotion.

Interview 1-2 people who have known you for a long time, ideally parents, relatives, or long-time friends. Ask them how they have seen you change over the time they've known you.

The Assignment:

In a 2- to 3-page paper, address the following:

Based on your experience this week, do you think a test can truly capture the essence of a person's personality? Support your answer.

Discuss an experience that impacted your personality (e.g., a life event, a realization you needed to change).

Are there things about yourself (e.g., behaviors, habits, personality) that you would like to change? Is changing them difficult? Why or why not?

To what degree are you the person you want to be? Identify the gaps and how you might address them (or how you are currently addressing them).
