The production of hydrochloric acid in the stomach is activated to facilitate the digestion process and also under stress conditions. As the contents of the stomach move into the small intestine, cells produce bicarbonate (HCO31-) that neutralizes the gastric acid until the pH is about 5. Where do you stand on using antacids to neutralize the excess stomach acid? Why?
