Part 1: Sample Methodology

When writing about the methodology, a researcher needs to identify the key components of the study as described in Week 5 lecture on Sampling.

In probability sampling, as the size of sample as a proportion of the population decreases, so does the probability of selection. The larger the sample size, the more precise the estimates are. If a sample has a sample size of 1000 cases, the margin of error or sampling error.

A. Yes

B. No

Accepted characters: numbers, decimal point markers (period or comma), sign indicators (-), spaces (e.g., as thousands separator, 5000), ''E" or "e'' (used in scientific notation). NOTE: For scientific notation, a period Iv1UST be used as the decimal point marker.

When your measurement error is between 4.5 and 5%, the number of cases are _ . Enter a number (not text).

Tip: Use your Lecture 5 slides.

Review the graph on Sampling Lecture Slides to understand answer:

Alternatively, estimate the MOE with the Sampling calculator found under the SOS Help page.

Part 2: Codebook Literacy

This section of questions is assesses your knowledge and fluency with understanding codebooks.

Why does the following race variable need to be recoded into fewer categories than it appears in the GSS codebook?

RACE: What is your race? Indicate one or more races that you consider yourself to be:

1. White,

2. Black or African American,

3. American Indian or Alaska Native,

4. Asian Indian,

5. Chinese

18. REFUSED

A. Too many categories makes the interpretation difficult to understand and make comparisons across the data.

B. The number of observations (N) in each category are too small to be reliably interpretative.

C. Some race categories are not important and recoding the variable allows researchers to drop those categories that aree not important.

D. We recode in order to eliminate those categories that do not represent the majority of subgroups in our population.

E. A & C

F. B & D

G. A & B

A 7 point scale is used to capture the political views of a respondent through the variable: POLVIEWS, as stated below. Are the values that the variable can take mutually exhaustive?

POLVIEWS: Categorical (Single)
