Discussion Post: Identity Theft
The Class Discussion is a required part of the course. This week, you will receive up to 5 points for contributing quality and accurate information to the discussion. You must write at least one full paragraph for your posting to receive credit. Also, please write in full sentences and avoid text messaging abbreviations. Watch your language! Do not say anything that you would not say to an instructor in the classroom.
Note that this discussion is NOT the place to ask questions about technical problems or assignments. Please use the Virtual Office Hours discussion for that purpose.
Identity Theft Identity theft occurs when someone acquires your personal information and uses it to hijack your finances. A common scenario is a thief using your Social Security number to open a credit card account in your name. When the thief does not pay, it is your credit history that is tarnished. For this week's class discussion, you should research this topic and then answer the following questions:
a) Have you or someone you know ever been a victim of identity theft?
b) Describe at least 3 different steps you can take to protect yourself from identity theft?
c) What should you do if you think your identity has been stolen?
