A. Chapter 5 opens with Mary McDowell as a teacher at Manual Training School in 1917. Explain how McDowell's teacher evaluation decreased from very good to poor. Include in your response, who was the person that evaluated McDowell; and what McDowell refused to teach and do, and why she refused.
B. Explain why Dana Goldstein uses the term "Witch Hunts" in the subtitle for Chapter 5? In your response, a) Express at least 3 different reasons it is considered a Witch Hunt. Be sure to include what effects the Witch Hunts had on teachers?
C. Based on this chapter, what are some differences and similarities between the Patriotism and Communism? What, if any, impact did it have on teachers?
D. If you were accused by your district of being against the American government, how would this affect you as a teacher? What would you do to address this situation?
E. How does this chapter make you feel as a person? As a teacher? Do you think it is okay for public school teachers to have any type or belief system even if it is an "Anti-American" belief system?
