Problem
In the play The Cherry Orchard by Chekhov the orchard had been reduced to nothing more than a glorified artifact from the past. The cherry orchard symbolizes the past and, in turn, the unique memories connected to it on a more metaphorical level. These memories are each as distinct and different as the distinct personalities with which they are connected. For Ranevsky, She is looking for solace in her "innocent childhood," the past. She would see the cherry orchard from her bedroom window every morning, and the fact that she fantasizes about her deceased mother passing through it only strengthens the idea that it represents that time in her life. Regarding age, it was evident that the elder Firs and Ranevsky generations had a strong sense of nostalgia for the cherry orchard and associated it with an idealized past in which class distinctions were clear-cut and never disputed. The younger generations of Trofimov and Anya, in contrast, start to associate the idea of the orchard with oppression and mistreatment of the agrarian class. Again, there is a noticeable difference in how the cherry orchard is seen depending on the context of the lesson. For instance, Lopakhin, a member of the middle class, connected the cherry orchard to the difficult upbringing he received as a peasant with a violent father. Ranevksy of the upper class, in contrast, associates the orchard with her own warm childhood recollections. Depending on the personality of the character, it can either be a positive or negative source of nostalgia.
After reading a little bit on the history behind this piece of work and such I am pondering the question as to what would have Chekhov wrote about had he himself not came down with TB and been exhiled from his family?
