Both are forest patches surrounded by agriculture, but one is circular and the other is square. As an ornithologist, you know that edge effects for birds (e.g., high nest predation rates) extend to the first 50 meters of an edge with open habitats. What will be the area in hectares of the core zone (the area that will be immune to edge effects) of your protected area if it is circular and if it is square? What will be the percentage reduction of core area to total area in each case?
