Problem
Meet Alex (they/them), a 28-year-old who has recently been referred to therapy for treatment of trauma and addiction. Alex has a history of childhood sexual abuse and has been struggling with symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) for many years. They report experiencing frequent nightmares and flashbacks of the abuse, as well as feelings of shame and guilt. Alex also struggles with feelings of hopelessness and has difficulty forming and maintaining healthy relationships.
Alex has also been struggling with addiction to alcohol and opioids for the last few years. They report using substances as a way to cope with their trauma symptoms and has a history of multiple failed attempts at substance abuse treatment.
Upon assessment, Alex is found to have a high level of emotional dysregulation, with intense feelings of anger and anxiety. They also report experiencing dissociation, and difficulty with trust and attachment in their relationships. Alex is also found to have a history of multiple adverse childhood experiences (ACE) including physical abuse, emotional abuse, neglect, and exposure to domestic violence.
