The (American) Socialist Party advocated for fairness for all workers and social equality, but it racist policies meant that there was not a large black following. After the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution in Russia and the creation the USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics), the Communist Party sent out a similar message of social justice and ended up gaining some black followers, especially Harlem activists and intellectuals. For this discussion please look at why communism appealed to an increasing number of African Americans in the 1930s. Next, look at how the Republican and Democrat parties responded to the concerns of African-Americans during the Great Depression and the New Deal, and how these responses compared with what the Communist Party was offering.
