Communicating with Elected Officials
The Affordable Care Act (ACA) requires that insurance exchanges be established in each state by 2014. The federal government will provide initial funding to help each state develop its insurance exchange. The state can design its exchange in a way that best fits into the current state delivery systems. If the state decides not to establish an insurance exchange, the federal government will establish an insurance exchange in that state. In this discussion, you will think about what is necessary to leverage influence with your elected officials.
Respond to the following:
1. What strategies would you use to develop positive working relationships with your elected officials?
2. Would there be differences in how you might cultivate relationships with local officials versus state or federal officials? Why or why not?
3. Assume you have built a relationship over time with your legislators. You want to talk with them about the implementation of a state health exchange. Time to communicate with them will be very limited. Thinking about this video and what you have learned over this term, what do you feel would be the important points to cover?
