What sort of government is preferable to a state of nature

Problem:

For the sake of this discussion, let's just suppose that some sort of government is preferable to a state of nature. Imagine one of your loved ones--let's call her Thoreau, for the sake of the exercise-has decided not to pay her taxes because she believes that government funds are contributing to the looming climate catastrophe. Pick a side to argue and make the best case you can as to why Thoreau should or should not pay her taxes. Be sure to reference issues in the book and lecture notes about the legitimacy of government power. Present the best objection you can think of against the case you just made. Come back in discussion to give the best responses you can think of to the points your classmates make. If the best response is to modify your initial view, then it is fine to revise your own view in the face of the objections you have considered. be sure to answer each question in roman numeral
