What social stratification looks like world-wide

Discussion Post: Social Stratification

In the past few years, hundreds of thousands of women (and men) marched together across the country to support women. Their causes and agendas varied, and while you may not agree with all of them,or you may, it can't be denied that their protest was very much against social stratification.

In your own words, what is social stratification?

The book explores what social stratification looks like world-wide. Provide an example of stratification here in the United States (be sure to cite your reference). Discuss this example within the context of the terms of the chapter.

Apply one of the theories of social inequality discussed in these chapters to your example.

For Example: Part of the rationale behind the women's march was to protest he unfair treatment that women continue to encounter in society. This article discusses just one of many, the gender pay gap here in the USA. Men are still paid more for their work than women. This is a form of stratification because it prevents women from having equal financial opportunity. This provides men with greater economic power and privilege and increases their overall status in society.

A structural-functional theory of stratification might argue that men need to make more money than women because they are responsible for providing financially for their families where women are not. This way of distributing pay is then meeting a need in society. Had this been 60 years ago this argument may have hold some, though not much, weight. We know today that a significant amount of women head a single parent home or are an equal contributor to the household income. This means that women are shouldering the same responsibilities without the same compensation, preventing from providing the same standard of living or opportunities that men, who receive a greater income, are able to provide.

The response should include a reference list. One-inch margins, Using Times New Roman 12 pnt font, double-space and APA style of writing and citations.
