What shift interferes with that persons important activities

Problem

Consider the following: A woman with child-care responsibilities could require a shift change in order to meet those responsibilities and to not be discriminated against as a result of her family status. However, that could require someone else to take that shift. What if that shift interferes with that person's important extracurricular activities or important relationships but not in way that invites a legal claim for discrimination? Do you believe that is fair? What answer would you propose to resolve this situation?
