As budgets tighten and personnel is reduced, police departments across the country are looking to maximize. The cost of policing today has become problematic for cities across America. Cities have furloughed and laid off more law enforcement officers or left more vacancies unfilled than contemporary police leaders have ever witnessed. At the same time, the law enforcement officer's salary and benefit reductions are becoming the norm.
The science of what really works to control crime can help local officials better craft and implement effective strategies to make their communities safer.
But if helping police departments get smarter is such a good idea, why hasn't a science-driven approach to crime control already become commonplace in American policing?
