Columbus has become a controversial figure in the last decade. He went from heroic explorer to murderous conqueror after historians and other scholars began to challenge the mythic version that was popularized in the twentieth century. After reading the assigned material for Quiz 2 and Chapter 2 of Lies My Teacher Told Me (See ASU Library Reading List on the left of Canvas course shell) answer the following questions: What purposes did the heroic version of Columbus serve? Why was it challenged? Which version (the mythic or the historically accurate one) do you think should be taught in public schools? Why?
