Observe the facial expressions of persons interacting in any one of the following locations: -
- classroom
- checkout line at a grocery store
- restaurant
- bank
- gas station
Then, answer the following questions:
1- What purpose do smiles and frowns seem to serve in the location you observed? What relationships do gender, status and personality seem to have with smiling behaviors?
2- Describe a situation in which a person you were interacting with exhibited non-verbal behaviors that contradicted their verbal message. Which message did you believe? How did you react?
3- Describe your particular experience with the "Breaking the Rules" exercise. What non-verbal rules did you choose to break? How did the subject react? What conclusions can you draw about the purpose and value of nonverbal rules from your experience?
