Decision Making Scenario: The Special Contract
You are a member of the Management Team for the Special Care Products Limited. Your company has recently received a very large contract for specialized PPE. This contract will ensure the company makes a very good profit from the contract and some of you on the Management Team will receive a bonus. The contract stipulates that the specialized PPE be ready for delivery within 6 weeks. This is an extremely short turn around time and the Management Team is not sure if they can meet the deadline. Special Care Products is a union facility and Management has a good relationship with the Union; however, this will mean a lot of overtime and because your workforce is divided into those workers who are nearing retirement age, and are not interested in a lot of overtime, and younger workers with young families and responsibilities for children after their shifts that restricts their eagerness for overtime, you are not sure how you will deal with the need for more hours on the floor. The current Collective Agreement runs for another 2 years.
The specialized PPE contract will also mean retooling some of the machines and this requires specialized staff, some of which is in the company but some of which will need to be hired specifically for this job.
