What matters in the realm of law and morality

Problem:

Meursault argues throughout The Stranger that nothing matters. In contrast, Marie understands what matters in love; the prosecutor during the trial understands what matters in the realm of law and morality; and the priest who visits him in his prison cell understands what matters regarding God and the afterlife. The thesis of the paper should defend whether Meursault or the other characters in the novel have the more correct position regarding what matters in life. The thesis should be tested by devoting half the paper to a serious consideration of the opposing position. The paper should conclude by reaffirming and possibly revising the thesis in light of the arguments discussed that challenged it. Rather than using outside sources, argument must be developed by quoting, analyzing, and citing Camus's The Stranger (Week 2 folder).
