What kind of image of south emerged in popular culture

Problem: In the wake of the Civil Rights Movement, southerners self-consciously rebranded their region, distancing themselves from the racial demagoguery that had marked the South since Reconstruction. Popular musicians proudly hailed their southern heritage, television shows and movies held out the promise of a happily integrated region even as they rejected the mythology of the Old South, and southern literature blossomed. Pick a movie, television show, song, or book that from the post-Civil Rights era that you think reveals something about the ways in which the South tried to rebrand itself, how conceptions of southern identity shifted, and/or the ways in which the South remained saddled with enduring stereotypes. Explain why you think the piece of popular culture you selected was so revealing, and then think about the following questions. How successful do you think this rebranding was? Does your choice (and analysis) seem to coincide with what Kirby argued in his chapter from Media Made Dixie? What kind of image of the South had emerged in popular culture by the end of the 20th century?
