"Distance to the Center of the Galaxy"
1) What kind of clusters are used to measure the distance to the center of the galaxy? Why are they chosen?
2) Why do distance calculations to open star clusters - like we did for the Pleiades - not help very much in measuring the distance to the center of the galaxy?
3) What part of the H-R diagram is used to measure the distance to globular clusters? Why?
4) If all the known clusters in the Milky Way were used - about 200 of them - would it improve our estimate very much?
5) Extra Credit: What did Harlow Shapley notice about some clusters that showed where the center of the galaxy is?
