Assignment: West Virginia Infractions
In the 2015 NCAA infractions case involving West Virginia University, the NCAA Division I Committee on Infractions found that between June 2010 and February 2013, West Virginia University coaches in 14 sports sent impermissible text messages and placed impermissible calls to prospective student-athletes and parents.
Review the 2015 West Virginia University Infractions Report and develop a written report (2 to 3 pages) that addresses the following questions:
1) What key NCAA bylaws were violated by West Virginia University coaches and what do they require?
2) If you were a rules-compliance officer, how would you ensure your program's head coaches were able to meet these expectations?
3) One of the major discussions over the past few years is whether recruiting legislation should be deregulated. Proponents of deregulation believe the burden placed on coaches and compliance officers outweighs the benefits of regulating certain types of recruiting activities. Opponents of deregulation believe the elimination of the legislation will provide an unfair competitive advantage to schools with more resources and may also cause a burden of prospective student-athletes by causing coaches to contact them too frequently. Explain your stance on this issue.
