Assignment task: The Shawshank Redemption Graphic Essay Assignment
To help you go through the mental task of analyzing The Shawshank Redemption as it would apply to a literary exploration essay question without actually making you write an essay, you will complete a graphic essay and communicate your ideas with a mixture of text and images.
Create a graphic essay in response to your choice of the following prompts:
a) What is your opinion of the idea that self-reliance is an important human characteristic?
b) What is your opinion of the idea that an individual's life can be altered by a particular experience?
c) What is your opinion of the idea that individuals need a sense of purpose in their lives?
Your graphic essay MUST include the following elements:
1. A thesis statement (the because statement) that tells me your opinion in response to the prompt. Remember to tell me WHY this is your opinion.
2. A topic sentence for the character you are going to focus on that ties this character to your thesis statement.
Ex. Denny Swift demonstrates that self-reliance is an important human characteristic in the novel The Art of Racing in the Rain as he and his dog Enzo fight against all odds to regain custody of his daughter, Zoe.
3. An established and explained character arc that describes the character's experience as it relates to your thesis statement (initially, however, consequently).
4. At least three quotes that help to highlight the character's experience. Each quote should have a short explanation to help support it.
5. Visual elements that demonstrate creativity including supporting symbols and visual representations of theme or setting.
