I want you to read a short story called Everyday Use by Alice Walker and answer the following questions. The short story you can find online or Google it. There are five questions for each question I want a paragraph and use evidence from the text if necessary.
• Walker's short story is based on two sets of contrasts, a direct one between people and a more indirect one between attitudes. What are these contrasts? Identify and explain them.
• Why has Dee taken on a new name? What is the point of the conversation in which she and her mother discuss the origin of her given name?
• Why you think Dee makes sure to include the house when taking photographs of her mother and sister? Why does she want the quilts stitched by her grandmother? What IRONY can you find in her behavior?
• Why do you think Walker titled this story Everyday Use?
• What is your favorite line of the text from this story? Write the quotation and explain why it's important and/ or significance to you.
