Problem
Scenario I
An AOD worker is talking to a consumer about their drug usage. The consumer has overdosed on prescription medication on at least three occasions. The worker is called away from the room for an extended period of time by a colleague that needs assistance. The worker leaves the consumer alone in a room with a cabinet that is unlocked and contains a large number of painkillers. When they return to the room, they find that the consumer has ingested a large amount of the painkillers, and is unconscious on the floor.
• Has the worker met their legal obligations in this instance? Explain your response in detail.
Scenario II
A colleague tells you that they are organising sexual abuse counselling for a consumer who was abused as a child and began using drugs as a result. You ask them if that is what the consumer wants and they tell you that it does not matter what the consumer wants, counselling is what they need.
• What is wrong with this approach in terms of the values and philosophies of the sector?
