Problem:
I know that it is usually considered a double membrane like those surrounding mitochondria and chloroplasts, but I read a review that stated "according to topological details it is actually a single lipid bilayer; this distinction is important"
Question: Could anyone please explain how this is true and why the distinction is important?
Question: Why this topological analysis wouldn't apply to other membranous structures in the cell?
Please provide proper answers for these questions.
