Assessment 1 - Details of the task

Each short piece will provide your response to a question, discussed in class, relating to the lecture topic and set reading for the week. Each short piece should be written in your own words. This task is designed to gradually develop your ability to engage with, think about, and write about the sociological concepts and materials we cover in the early topics of the unit. The task is also designed to develop your ability to draft, develop, and edit your work for submission.

  • Developing skills in editing and polishing
  • Developing appropriate use of academic language and conventions of referencing

Assessment 2: Short Essay

Details of the task

Drawing upon the lectures, readings and discussions from the early weeks of the unit, write a short essay presenting a thoughtful and informed response to one of the following questions:

Question 1. What is the sociological imagination? Draw on Willis's model to describe it, and explain how it can improve our understanding of our lives and our social world.

Question 2. Describe and discuss one or two of the major sociological theoretical perspectives.

Question 3. Is what ways is Australian society equal or unequal? Discuss with reference to inequalities of class OR gender OR ethnicity.

The short essay builds upon the thinking and writing completed during the first assessment task, and will be marked according to the following criteria:

  • Demonstrated engagement with unit content from lectures, tutorials and set reading
  • Developing understanding of sociological ideas and concepts
  • Developing clear and effective written expression
  • Developing use of essay and paragraph structure
  • Developing appropriate use of academic language and conventions
