1. Restorative justice, which came about in the 1980s, is a relatively new idea in sentencing. Do some research on restorative justice and describe its purpose and goals, as well as how the process is carried out. Is restorative justice been shown to be effective? How does the general public feel about it? What might be getting in the way of an effective restorative justice movement?
2. What is the general public's attitudes toward punishment and criminal sentencing. Consider the four goals of punishment that are discussed: which goal would be more favorable to the general public? Do you agree with the general public?
3. Should rehabilitation be a primary goal of corrections? Why or why not? If rehabilitation is not the primary goal of corrections, should it still be incorporated into prison programs, with the idea that it may nonetheless provide some benefit to offenders and society? What problems might such programs face?
4. Research the topic of jury reform. Some advocates of reform propose a professional jury pool that has training in matters of criminal procedure. Is this a viable alternative to the current jury system? What other reforms are advocated?
5. Should the system of commercial bail bonding be abolished? Research the topic. What are some alternatives that other countries use?
