Questions for Sound and the Ear:
- What is the Fourier theorem? Find me an equation or picture that describes the decomposition of a square wave into its Fourier components. Explain in your own words what the Fourier theorem, and what this equation or picture means.
- Find a video online that you think offers a GOOD explanation of how sound is processed by the ear, and converted to a neural signal. Send me the link.
- Describe the two types (or groups) of hair cells in the cochlea and what you think each group does.
Questions for Hearing and Auditory Illusions:
- Can you think of some ways the mc gurk effect and the ventriloquist effect are related? Define both illusions, explain the role of visual information in both illusions, and talk about how that is similar or different for the two effects.
- Explain how a monaural cue can give you information about the location of a sound in the environment!
- Explain how the Shephard tone and the Risset Rhythm are constructed. What illusion does each one create?
