What is the difference between a strike and a lockout

Problem

From the case study "Management and Leadership in Today's Organizations" Labour woes face government organizations.

A. Check online and see how long the workers in each situation were on strike or locked out. Did they get what they wanted? Can you find any ongoing strikes or lockouts in the news that have lasted for more than a year?

B. What is the difference between a strike and a lockout? Why would there have been a locko at Canada Post?

C. Union density (the percentage of unionized workers) in Canada is less today than it was 40 years ago. Do you think that government intervention in strikes has influenced this trend? What other factors may have contributed?

D. Most industrial relations scholars agree that strikes have more to do with corporate culture than with the wage demands of workers. What does this mean? What sorts of factors in the workplace might cause you to be willing to strike?

E. How have the lawsuits discussed in the clips progressed? What other steps have the "frustrated" union-members taken when their right to strike was reduced?
