Public issues can go into the realm of law and have an impact on company performance. From a business ethics standpoint, you must have understood that a company should not sacrifice the public interest for its own sake. In business ethics we are taught to think about the interests of others too.
In college, you are also familiar with the concept of the triple bottom line, namely profit - people - planet. where the performance of a company is not only judged by profit, but by concern and real action (not just jargon and promises) for the planet (environment) and people.
