Cool: The Intersection of Verbal and Nonverbal
This week we start the deep dive into the two-parts of communication--the Verbal and Nonverbal aspects. To that end, we have to remember that one never exists without the other. In that way, please, watch this "cool" video about the origins of the concept of "Cool." As you watch it, notice how the verbal (the word "cool") is interdependent and only relative to the nonverbal representations of "cool" in African and African-American and Black culture. What is significant about the word "cool," how it has evolved over time, and how is cool represented nonverbally? Why is it significant that this concept bears the moniker of "cool" and not some other term? What does it mean, then, when non-black or African descendent folks try to be "cool"?
