Assignment task:
1. In a portion of the article not reprinted here, Burch quotes strategists Symone Sanders as saying that "Black women have been showing up for years for the Democratic Party. They have long been a key voting bloc, but only recently has that power been recognized". Why do you think Black women's voting power has been recognized "only recently"? Has it been sufficiently recognized? Why or why not?
2. What is the significance of Burch's use of Kamala Harris' tweet? What larger questions does the tweet evoke?
3. Research Doug Jones and Roy Moore. Why do you think levels of support for these candidates in particular were so strongly affected by race and gender? Compare and contrast your findings.
4. Do you think Black women's "voting muscle" will translate into government action on issues that matter to Black women, and to the Black community more generally? Why or why not? What factors might influence the will of the government to address these issues?
