Problem
Obese adults without Type II diabetes were invited to participate in a clinical trial. The purpose of the clinical trial was to evaluate the efficacy of a new oral medication aimed at reducing the incidence of Type II diabetes in obese adults. Subjects were randomized to a treatment group or a control group.
The treatment group (n=150) was instructed to take the new medication once a day; the control group (n=150) was instructed to take a placebo (designed to look like the medication) once a day. The subjects and the medical staff assigned to evaluate the subjects were not aware of each subject's group assignment (treatment vs. control). Subjects were followed for one-year.
