Problem
Much of books II and III in the Republic is concerned with the education of the guardians, whose task is to protect the city (polis).
a) Socrates identifies "spirit" (thumos) as a quality the guardians need to possess (375a-b). What is this quality, and why is it potentially dangerous to the city as well as being necessary to it?
b) The two divisions of the guardians' education are music and gymnastic (376e); "music" includes stories about the gods that are told to children. But Socrates objects to some of these stories. What is one example of such a story, and why does Socrates object to it?
