Background

Your early childhood education program has decided to incorporate STEAM education and language enrichment into the program goals for all age groups. In preparation, you decide to educate families on the developmental characteristics and indicators for cognitive and language development, specifically for infants and toddlers. Providing an explanation to families about how their children are experiencing STEAM concepts at such an early age will set them up for future learning in math, science, and language, and is critical to their buy-in to the new program goals. To best support all families, you decide that you will record a video so families can watch it while at home.

Directions:

You will create a PowerPoint and then use it to record a video of you presenting it for program families.

  • Your completed PowerPoint will have at least twelve slides, including a title slide, conclusion slide and references slide. Your presentation should be professional, including appropriate images/visuals, fonts, and colors.
  • There should be minimal words on each slide by following the 7X7 rule -use at most seven bullets or lines of text on a single slide and no more than seven words on a single line. This is to avoid too much content on a single slide.
  • Your main speaker content should be written in the Notes section for each slide. Use this section to write out what you will say during your recorded presentation. Include appropriate in-text citations on slides for when you incorporate credible resources to support your thinking.

- Choose one age group from the following: Infants (Birth to 12 months), Toddlers (12-24 months), or Two's (24-36 months).

- In your PowerPoint, include the following items. You should have 1-2 slides per topic listed.

3. Explain at least two reasons why focusing on cognitive development is important at this age. Remember developmentally appropriate practices here.

4. Describe at least three specific changes to your curriculum/environment you will be making to better support cognitive development for this age group. This may include materials, activities, or routines.

Language Development:

1. Explain: What is meant by language development overall?

2. Explain at least five developmental characteristics and indicators of language development for children in the chosen age group. Include one credible resource to support your thinking, along with the appropriate in-text citation for the resource.

3. Explain at least two reasons why focusing on language development is important at this age. Remember developmentally appropriate practices here.

4. Describe at least three specific changes to your curriculum/environment you will be making to better support language development for this age group. This may include materials, activities, or routines.

Conclusion:

1. Conclude your presentation with an invitation for families to spend time visiting your program to see learning in action.

2. Include one reference slide with all resources used and with in-text citations listed in APA format.
