The traditional 2-parent nuclear family is not the typical family in the United States today. Family forms determine the structure of family roles. Single-parent and stepparent families are the two most common nonnuclear family forms.
• What is the importance of a good assessment of the family dynamic and disease to develop an appropriate care plan for a psychiatric patient?
• What considerations about family need to be observed by a psychiatric nurse practitioner to ensure appropriate psychiatric treatment? (Family structure, presence of violence, traumatic experiences, family or personal culture, economic and housing situation, can the patient afford the ordered medications?).
