Read the attached document over the Federalist Papers by James Madison dealing with the Separation of Powers. They are Federalist Number 47, 48, and 51. Federalist 51 is the most famous of the three but the other two help give context to separation of powers.

Address the following questions/issues:

A. What is argued as the purpose for the separation of powers?

B. Do you think the Founders' creation of separation of powers has worked to keep each branch equal in power? Explain.

C. The creation of separation of powers in the Constitution was created before the two-party system existed. Do you think the existence of the Republican Party and the Democratic Party has altered how the Founders expected separation of powers to work? Explain.

D. What additional powers should be created for one or all of the branches to make Government work more effectively? (For example, a president can't pass any law without Congress and so forth) Suppose you wanted to make government more efficient in its policy and decision-making. Which of the following changes would you favor? Or think of a different one not on the list.
