Problem
I. Did you like the movie or not? Why? What impression and information about life in Moscow in the 1950s and 1970s can you get from the film? How does it compare to American productions of the same genre?
II. Discuss the ideological messages in the movie. Let me be honest: I have no idea why Moscow Doesn't Believe in Tears won the Academy Award in 1980. I hope you can tell me. What was in this movie that resonated with the American public? Other ideological aspects that I would suggest are feminism and the empowerment of women. Also, you can discuss how Russians see romance and relationship and how it is (or is not) different from how Americans see these things. Do you think the filmmakers did a good job with the creative and ideological sides?
