What images are necessary to recover the workstation

Problem

Scenario Information:

We are continuing on with the hypothetical scenarios we used earlier (in these Real-World Exercises). Part of implementing Ken 7 Windows' new enterprise resource planning (ERP) software is setting up a new recovery procedure for each type of computer. These procedures will guide administrators in recovering a failed computer to a condition as near to the point of failure as possible. The goal is to minimize both downtime and data loss.

You have already implemented the following backup strategies for workstation computers:

1) All desktop workstations were originally installed from a single image for Ken 7 Windows standard workstations. The base image is updated with all patches and new software installed on live workstations.

2) Desktop workstation computers execute a backup of identified folders that contain new and modified files every night at 1:00 a.m. Desktop workstation backups generally take less than 10 minutes.

Using MS Word, develop a procedure guide for a security audit at Ken 7 Windows Limited. The following tasks are to be completed and included in this guide:

A. Describe the steps necessary to recover a desktop workstation computer that encounters a disk drive failure at 5:30 a.m. local time. The user arrived at work and found that the computer would not boot.

B. Answer the following questions:

a. How much data has been modified between the last backup and the time of failure?

b. What images are necessary to recover the workstation?

c. What are the steps necessary to fix the problem that cause the data loss?

d. What steps should Ken 7 Windows Limited take to avoid a reoccurrence of this issue in the future?

C. Once you have answered the questions above, fill in the following details to develop your procedure guide. Describe the process of:

a. Fixing the issue that caused the problem in the first place. Keep the description of this process general. Just address the problem and ensure the recovery process starts with a functional computer.

b. Restoring the newly repaired computer to a base workstation.

c. Restoring local data for the specific workstation that failed.

D. Provide the steps to follow for each of the restore operations. Assume you will be using the Windows Backup and Restore feature.
