Problem: A patient comes in for a routine visit at 32 weeks. Her fundal height measures 36 cm. What is your response to the patient when she asks why it is so much higher? She may have increased fluid in the amniotic sac; an ultrasound may be necessary to assess for such a condition. A 4 cm gain at this point in the gestation is due to lightening. Although there is an increase, there is no further intervention needed because the baby will plateau in the next week. The increase may be due to oligohydramnios.
