And here is my response: Problem-solving courts are courts intended to deal with one exact, particularly troublesome offense type. The textbook gave various examples of problem-solving courts which are drug courts, domestic violence courts, community courts, teen courts, mental-health courts, and homeless courts (Worrall, 2018). Mental health courts use between collaborative justice approach to offer a therapeutic alternative to the traditional justice procedure for defendants with mental illnesses directly relevant to their alleged criminal offenses (Yuan & Capriotti, 2019). The article cited that in 2005, 56% of state prisoners, 45% of federal prisoners, and 64% of local jail inmates met the requirements for at minimum one psychiatric disorder and reported a mental health problem. Mental-health courts are therapeutically oriented judicial approaches to help resolve jail overcrowding, confront the increase of homelessness, and join gaps between the criminal justice system and community mental health treatment agencies. They are a problem-solving court that addresses the issues by sentencing convicted offenders to a program of probation-like supervising and mental health treatment in the community, as a substitute for incarceration (Yuan & Capriotti, 2019).
