Problem
We have been discussing the ancient Greeks' concern to remove all subjectivity in the program of competitive events to provide equal competitive conditions as well as punishments for those who disrespect the games' rules. However, such aspects of athletics that we identify in the stephanitic events differ from what Homer portrays in his poems. What are these differences? Why do you think they exist? Can such differences impact the way arete is perceived in Homeric poems and in the ancient games?
