What have the coen brothers taken from homers text

Problem:

This short assignment asks you to think about how one of the stories we read in Lit Hum--in this case, the Odyssey--is reused and repurposed in a modern context. Watch the 2000 Coen Brothers film, "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" and then write a short review of how the film engages with, changes, and adapts stories and characters from the Odyssey. What have the Coen brothers taken from Homer's text? What have they left out? How do they alter or change what we read in the text, and to what purpose? What is the overall narrative arc of the film as compared to that of the Greek epic? There is no "right" answer to any of these questions, or others that you may want to pursue. Be creative, and have some fun with this. There are a lot of things you could consider: the dialogue, the characterizations of various characters, the song lyrics (and the use of music in general). And while I want you to think seriously about this comparison, you need not adopt an overly formal tone.
