As a member of the Ballistics Unit, you are required to attend the scene of a shooting on a farm in rural Victoria. Witnesses report hearing a single shot. You observe shotgun pellets in the side of a shed. You also observe a shotgun pellet and footprints that indicate the shooter was approximately 10 metres away when they shot at the shed.
The defence team have hired a person who disputes your findings regarding the distance of the shooter from the house. The person has managed a gun shop for 35 years, and has competed in rifle shooting at the Olympics. What factors should the judge consider when determining if the person can be admitted as an expert witness?
