Scientists are trying to isolate a "longevity gene" that might extend human life spans to 150 years and raise the average life expectancy to 120 instead of 74. This research may lead to the discovery of genes responsible for cancer, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, osteoporosis, heart disease, and stroke. Could gene transplants cure these diseases and extend human life? What would be the possible consequences of such
manipulations? What ethical considerations will need to be addressed?
Should more resources be devoted gene resources which may reduce the costs of "entitlement" programs like Medicare? What of reducing family expenses for nursing care?
