What dynamics need to be considered when leading a team comprised of members from diverse backgrounds? Explore different ideas you find online and share them.

Leadership requires a diverse set of knowledge when it comes to a team. Being able to be respectful of one's culture, language, background, and skill set are all dynamics that should be considered. When a leader understands what is of importance to their team, a working relationship can be built, trust can be established between employee and leader, and with trust comes the power to influence.

I once had a leader that was (in my opinion) out of touch with the culture of African American women and our hair. She was white and her team was majority black. During an early morning shift huddle, her team complimented how pretty her hair was and she made a very derogatory comment in response about the hair of black women. I won't share the comment, however it her opinion, it should not have been offensive because she grew up with black girls and she has black friends. Needless to say, what little influential power she did have was all gone.

The story above demonstrates a lack of understanding when it relates to other cultures besides her own. When leading a team, educating yourself on the importance of other cultures would aid in avoiding unnecessary comments during shift huddles.

According to an article published by Better Up, there are nine factors that contribute to team dynamics. They are:

  • Team culture
  • Leadership (weak leadership or strong leadership)
  • Shared, common goals
  • Trust (or lack of trust)
  • Decision-making skills
  • Teamwork or collaboration skills
  • Groupthink
  • Communication skills
  • Conflict resolution skills
  • Team alignment

I do agree with this comprehensive list and believe that if all leaders were to adapt the factors listed, they would no doubt have a strong team of individuals to lead.
