Given that gratuities are generally seen as the first step toward serious corruption, law enforcement agencies never support accepting gratuities. The culmination of the phases is what draws and pushes police toward more egregious forms of unethical behavior. A coffee leads to a coffee and a doughnut, which, once an officer starts down the slippery slope, leads to a complementary lunch. These gifts work together to produce a situation that is hard for the officer to alter or reverse. Law enforcement officials must be careful when accepting gratuities for the following reasons: police are professionals, and professionals don't accept gratuities. Other professions, like physicians, are not restricted from taking gratuities. People will anticipate a different response. Gratuities could undermine public trust. The possibility of a slippery slope exists; accepting gratuities might open the door to more corruption. The public pays the police so they may treat everyone fairly.
