Problem
A. What do you make of Thomson's comments about 'indecency' in connection with Marquis' argument that it is 'seriously morally wrong to take the life of a being with FLO'? For example, Thomson writes, "We surely must grant that there may be cases in which it would be morally indecent to detach a person from your body at the cost of his life." (p. 14/59)
B. Read the two scenarios below. Apply two, and only two of the thinkers we read on the morality of abortion: Thomson, and Marquis.
Let's consider the story of Susan. Susan was an avid fan of Bon Jovi, so much so that she traveled around the country and attended every single Bon Jovi concert in the US. Tragically, after leaving one such concert, Susan was raped and became pregnant. After much contemplation, 11 weeks into her pregnancy Susan decided to get an abortion. Since she lived in an informed consent state, she went to meet the gynecologist 2 days before she planned to have the procedure. As mandated by law, the doctor performed an ultrasound and discovers that the fetus's cerebral cortex is malformed to such an extent that if the fetus were to be born she (it is a girl) would never develop the cognitive capacities beyond those of a two year old. Although Susan had planned to have the abortion, this bit of knowledge further strengthens her decision.
Now consider Tammy. Tammy's situation is identical to Susan's expect that Tammy had decided to carry the pregnancy to term (Tammy didn't want an abortion, so she didn't have an informed consent meeting; however, through the normal course of pre-natal care, she had an ultrasound that revealed the fetus had the same condition as Susan's did). She was quite happily preparing for the birth of the child when she realized that the due date was during the week-long Bon Jovi-fest far, far away from where she lived. Upon realizing this (well into her 6th month of pregnancy), Tammy elects to have an abortion.
C. Read this ProPublica article on free speech on campuses. Pick one of the stories highlighted in the article as your reference for answering the following question: How does the article's focus relate to Wub-e-ke-niew's argument and Mill's theory of free speech?
D. Is Mill's theory of free speech applicable to either (but not both!) Toole's argument about epistemic oppression or Ladau's critique of Person First Language? If so, how? If not, why not?
E. One law professor thinks that social media platforms should not be legally responsible for the content users post. Summarize Prof. Laine's argument, which covers both areas of controversy over Section 230. Analyze Laine's position in connection with either Toole or Ladau's argument (but not both).
F. What does Wollstonecraft's argument about a woman's right to education have to do with free speech? Find a contemporary case (e.g., a news story) you can use to analyze the connection. Be sure to include a working link to the case you choose.
