1: Modern Society
Aldous Huxley wrote Brave New World in 1932. Since that time, society has changed a lot. Have we moved closer to Aldous Huxley's vision or further away? Think about the rise of prescription drugs/anti-depressants (soma), the progress made in the fields of genetic engineering in both plants and animals, how society has segmented into different class systems (and the difficulty of moving up that ladder), etc. Be creative! Your essay will be graded on how well you argue your points and how much effort you put into.
2: Colonialism
What does the novel have to say about the effects of colonialism? Is Huxley for or against the concept? How does Linda's experience living on the reservation mirror John's introduction to the World Government in London? Break down John's conversation with Mustapha Mond. What are the arguments each presents? How does the concept of freedom fit into each of their world views?
