Assignment task: What does it mean to use language "in the first person"?
Although the labels seem to imply that all individuals who share them are the same, it is obvious that they are not. To avoid labeling when describing human beings with disorders, we would have to use "first person" language. For example, in the case of autism, we should always refer to children with autism and not autistic children. Also, in addition to obtaining DSM-IV-TR diagnoses, it would always be wise to conduct thorough behavioral assessments to obtain accurate information leading to shaping the most effective individualized treatment program.
